He demands to know the name of the intruder. Returning to Rome after a victorious campaign, Licinius finds his beloved Julia has become a priestess of Vesta.

Julia stands watch before the sacred flame, which must never go out. The sacred flame goes out as they pledge mutual fidelity. The libretto has always been compared with that of Normaboth depicting a priestess who comes to grief through preferring profane to sacred love—although Spontini’s work, unlike Bellini’s, ends happily.

There is a rather sad plaque that one can see in Evstale Spontini, a town in the hills above Ancona, Spontini’s hometown where he retired after his opera writing career was over, to do “good works” with his French wife Celeste in the Catholic tradition.
